Leonora Bernardi (1559-1616), a gentlewoman of Lucca, was ahighly regarded poet, dramatist and singer. She was active in thebrilliant courts of Ferrara and Florence at a time when creativewomen enjoyed exceptional visibility in Italy. Like many suchfigures, she has since suffered historical neglect. Drama,Poetry and Music in Late-Renaissance Italy presents the firstever study of Bernardi's life, and modern edition of her recentlydiscovered literary corpus, which mostly exists in manuscript. Herwritings appear in the original Italian with new Englishtranslations, scholarly notes, critical essays and contributions byEric Nicholson, Eugenio Refini and Davide Daolmi.
Based on new archival research, the substantial opening sectionreconstructs Bernardi's unusually colourful life. Bernardi's worksreveal her connections with some of the most pioneering poets,dramatists and musicians of the day, including her mentor AngeloGrillo and the first opera librettist Ottavio Rinuccini. The secondmajor section presents her pastoral tragicomedy Clorilli,one of the earliest secular dramatic works by a woman. It wasapparently performed in the early 1590s at a Medici villa nearFlorence, before Grandduke Ferdinando I de' Medici, and his consortChristine of Lorraine, but now exists in an enigmatic Venetianmanuscript. The third section presents Bernardi's secular andreligious verse, which engaged with new trends in lyric and poetryfor music, and was set by various key composers across Italy.

The Critical Situation: Vexed Perspectives in Postmodern Literary Studies comprises a selection of essays that register the situatedness of critical theory and practice amid various intellectual, institutional, and cultural contexts. This book offers examples of situated criticism, which in turn are concerned with the ways in which literary and cultural criticism are and have been situated in relation to a variety of ideological and institutional structures, including those of world literature, American studies, spatial literary studies, cultural critique, globalization and postmodernity. These structures influence the ways that criticism is practiced, and due recognition of their continuing effects is crucial to the success of any meaningful critical practice in the twenty-first century.

This volume contains an edited selection of the papers read at the International Colloquium on Interpretation of Narrative held at the University of Toronto, 24 to 27 March 1976 by the Graduate Programme in Comparative Literature. The papers in the first part all deal with the methodology of text-oriented criticism; the papers in the second brng to the discussion a fundamental agreement and acceptance of the hermeneutic method and reception theory. It is most fitting that these proceedings should end with an attempt to find the holistic identity of interpretation of narrative. The papers in the third part were prepared for the colloquium and were published in part afterwards in Critical Inquiry and each assisted in the inquiry.
